Lucy Griffiths as Sharra

So now we come to one of the hardest characters on Pern for me to cast, Jaxom's true love Sharra. Sharra proved to a challenge largely due to the conflicting ideas about her appearance. McCaffrey herself says that Sharra is not supposed to be pretty, at least not like Corana, another girl in Jaxom's life. I contrasted that with Robin Wood's illustration which does indeed show a rather pretty woman, pardon the pun.

So I decided I had to find an actress who was not movie star gorgeous, but rather cute in a down to earth kind of way. No easy task and I was rejecting several possible women for a while till I finally found Lucy Griffiths. Griffiths will be primarily recognizable to fans of the new Robin Hood show for her role as Marian. I found her performance as Marian to have all the traits needed for Sharra, a fierce independence, an earthy feeling to her character, and best of all a very charming voice (this was important since Jaxom said Sharra could have been a singer).
